Launch of the Research Centre on Pensions, Ageing and Retirement

On December 13th, 2013 the new research centre CINTIA, Interuniversity Centre Netspar_Italy was launched at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. The kick-off conference of the centre gathered prominent Italian and international scholars, representatives of the institutions and the private sector to discuss on the contemporary issue of “Living with risks during the Great Recession. Longevity and generations”.  

Among the speakers coming from the academia, prof. Robert Holzmann from the University of Malaya and University of New South Wales delivered a keynote speech Addressing longevity through private annuities, while prof. Pierre-André Chiappori from Columbia University, prof. Tito Boeri and prof. Vincenzo Galasso from Bocconi University approached different issues regarding risk sharing across generations.  

The institution of the Italian research centre was welcomed by the former chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dutch Netspar, prof. Frank A. van der Duyn Schouten and the present chairman of the Board, prof. Theo Nijman who introduced the Netspar model. The two research centres plan to cooperate closely as part of a program fostering Netspar in Europe developed in order to meet problems regarding demographic and societal changes in European countries.

 At the end of the first day of sessions, the governor of Bank of Italy, Ignazio Visco addressed the public. (watch the video). 

The OECD representative, Anna D’Addio opened the second day of sessions with a presentation on Risk and Pensions, followed by a business panel where representatives of the private and public insurance sector and the academia discussed the contributions that research could have for a new social insurance model.

 

CINTIA is a network and research centre that aims at bridging the gap between scientific research and policies in the area of pensions, insurance provisions (both public and private) and population aging. CINTIA’s founding partners are Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Bocconi University of Milan, University of Bologna, University of Padova, University of Turin and Assicurazioni Generali.
